Chapter 11:
Deus Ex Machina
Location: Flatrake Island in the far north

After a lengthy break from excitement, the Vanguard is suddenly ordered to go north. The far north, in fact.

"Lord Gedstone of the Ministry of Justice has just informed me that four years ago a top-secret experimental communications device was stolen from a Navy research lab. And now they have reports that - three weeks ago - an object matching this missing device was discovered on the coast of an island in the far north. We understand that it has created something of a stir in the superstitious northern village that found it."

It’s a godforsaken place, Flatrake Island. Mile after mile of low-lying peat bog only punctuated by the odd gentle hill. It’s far in the north, cold and endlessly windy. There’s hardly anything here but a very long road running the length of the island. And a lonely Travellers Inn. Joint proprietors Ian Farrister & Eric Mattheson are very proud of the name they came up for their establishment: “The Long Road Inn”. There aren’t a lot of customers to appreciate it. A few local farmers use the place regularly. Other farmers stay the night when taking their produce to market in Port Gell on the southern tip. They do get the occasional gentlemen, sometimes even the odd family, who – for some reason that escapes Ian and Eric – come up here to hike in the Archipelago’s biggest wilderness. But that’s a nice little earner so they keep their cynicism in check. Ian’s even written a little pamphlet of notable walks that sells quite nicely. This evening, though, neither of them really know what’s hit them. It began with torches on the darkening horizon. The torches belonged to a procession, hundreds long, dressed in red hooded robes of a distinctly homemade appearance. More than a few of them are farmers that Ian and Eric have sheltered before. But tonight they’re not coming in. Not yet anyway. Instead they’re forming a camp about two hundred yards from the Inn, and there are still more coming down the road from the North.

Mountjoy sends several men ahead of the Vanguard to investigate the procession. They find it is a cult that is worshipping a large metal box as if it were an old etherite god. The box speaks, and claims to be just that, heading south to reclaim its former home in the Ziggurat on North Barrow. The implications are mind-blowing.

The officers try to test the box and are confounded. Some even start to question whether the box might not even be telling the truth. Others ask around and learn about how the box appeared on the northern coast, deposited there by a creature resembling a popular pulp fiction minion, according to the boy who claimed to witness it. Divided and deflated, the officers return to the Vanguard to report in, and shortly thereafter Lord Gedstone himself arrives by helicopter and forces Mountjoy to 'reclaim' the box using all necessary force.

The situation is looking dangerously unstable when the box itself seems to relent, and agrees to go to the Vanguard peacably if 'its people' are allowed to continue to Barrow. Mountjoy and Gedstone get into a confrontation about what will happen next:

"It’s not your concern, Mountjoy. Have it loaded onto my copter," says Gedstone.

"No Minister, I think the investigation should be left to me," says Mountjoy.

"You... what?"

Gedstone blinks with astonishment. Mountjoy stares him down knowingly. Some secret understanding is in play. But Mountjoy throws him a bone:

"It could be a bomb for all we know, Minister. Intended for you, or even the Chancellor. Leave it with us. We’ll get to the bottom of this."

Gedstone cools markedly: "You’re playing a dangerous game, Mountjoy. You’ve few enough allies left."
_________________
Dave
Those numbers are broadly correct. Smaller units can be bought. That would mean that the units are more likely to be used to working together and the merging of units may have morale effect, but nothing that can't be overcome.
